Recycling: making the most of rubble
The World Recycling Day takes place each year on the 18th of march. We have chosen to show you the path of reusing rubble. It is simply the recycling of mining waste like building site rubble, also called inert excavated material. Haladjian Minerals Solutions is active in recycling mining waste thanks to its CSR policy.
What is inert excavated material?
In the mining and the quarrying industry, inert excavated material is made by the waste of aggregate production and cannot undergo any significant physical, chemical, or biological modification.
They can be of different types such as:
- Concrete
- Earth
- Bricks
- Tiles
- Breeze blocks (cinder blocks)
- Natural stones
- Earthworks materials
Their main particularity is that they are neutral in nature. It means that they have no impact of the surrounding environment. Why? These are the main reasons why they are considered neutral in terms of impact:
- They do not produce any physical or chemical reaction
- They do not decompose
- They are not biodegradable.
- They do not have any pollution risk,
- They do not damage the other materials which they are in contact with
The reuse of inert excavated material into recycled aggregates
Inert excavated material can be reused in a variety of ways. Natural stone, earth, concrete, rubble, bricks, and tiles can be recovered to make aggregates of different sizes called recycled aggregates. They replace natural aggregates. Recycling is the best solution for recovering inert excavated material. Recycled aggregates meet the environmental quality and sustainable development specifications. It is important for Haladjian Minerals Solutions to respect environmental standarts.
Why use recycled aggregates?
Recycled aggregates can be used in several cases like:
- Saving non-renewable natural mineral resources.
- Giving a second life to materials such as rubble, concrete, earth…
- Reducing the storage of waste in landfill sites
It has also various possible applications like:
- Development: backfilling or raising of land, paths, car parks, etc.
- Road works: backfill, pavement backfill, finishing backfill, etc.
- Sewage works, networks: trench backfill
- Concrete for roads and networks
The recycle path of rubble from mining activities
Nothing better than an infographic to better understand the recycling of rubble into recycled aggregates.
These are the different stages of recovery of the rubble and their transformation into inert excavated material.
① Rubble, following the demolition of a building, construction work or public works
② Inert Spoil (rubble) to the recycling centre
③ Crushing of inert spoil (rubble), to produce the desired product grain size. Ex: 0/4 (sand) – 0/20 (gravel) – 4/6 (gravel)
④ The transformation of rubble into ready-to-use recycled aggregates
